Plus, we discuss sexual harassment, #MeToo, and fighting back.

We’re thrilled to introduce a new podcast hosted by friends-of-the-show Bim Adewunmi and Nichole Perkins. In this inaugural episode, they examine the charms of Southern men. With a little help from Nichole’s friend Cynthia Harris, they jumpstart the conversation looking at the very juicy André 3000 before sifting through portrayals of the South in film and TV. Plus: a battle for fanfiction supremacy in Fanfic Wars—vote early and vote often for your favorite.

On this week’s episode, we bring you our first international live show ever!  We went to London for the Shout Out Live Podcast Festival where we sang the praises of British television (namely Tracy’s newfound favorite show, “Embarrassing Bodies”).   Then we chatted with writer Bolu Babalola about the beauty of creating dark-skinned black women characters in her stories, and actor Susan Wokoma (of “Chewing Gum” and “Crazyhead”) on why she loathes being described as an overnight success.  Plus, a very special joint round from us both.

August 30, 2017

This week we celebrate our 101nst episode!  That’s right, the 101nst.  Having made over 100 episodes, we wanted to take some time to reflect on where we’ve been, what we’ve learned, and how our airhorn noises have improved (tremendously).  Join us as we interview some very special guests (their names rhyme with Shmeben and Shmacy), and share with you some of our favorite moments from the show.  And we didn’t have space to share all the fun stuff we wanted to share with you in this week’s episode, so make sure you listen to next week’s show for some bonus 101nst celebration conversations.

This week, we’re trying something a little different: we team up with our friends at WNYC’s Only Human podcast to find Tracy’s roots. Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, she always heard that her ancestors were, in her mother’s words, “black, white and American Indian.” But, like many black Americans, she’s found it hard to trace her family heritage with ancestors forced into the American slave trade. So Tracy turns to DNA ancestry tests, and experts on DNA and race, to find out where she comes from.

Sometimes you just gotta get together and laugh with your friends, which is why this week’s shot features two of our faves: Nichole Perkins, BuzzFeed Emerging Writers Fellow and Aaron Edwards, who does product and editorial at The Outline.

This week there’s a righteous game of Pew Pew Pew with friends and a conversation that goes from how you protest, to awkward dates, to cuss words and jivesicles. While you’re sipping on your beverage of choice, go ahead and consider the genius of doing crack with Donald Trump, and exactly what you’d do to not have to watch your parents having sex. You will laugh.

We never thought we’d do a single episode on both outer space and sexual assault, but that’s because we hadn’t met activist and aspiring astronaut Amanda Nguyen yet. She founded the organization Rise, to advocate for the rights of survivors of rape.

Did you know that in some states, untested rape kits can be thrown away after 30 days? Amanda tells us how legislation reflects rape culture, and how we can change this. When she’s not busy fighting, Amanda is preparing herself for space travel. (Yup!) We talk about who we’d want to beam into the beyond, and remember that even in the darkest of times in this universe, we’re never alone because we have each other.

You can find out more about Amanda’s organization at www.risenow.us.

This week, an exclusive, extra-long conversation with the one and only Remy Ma! She came by the women’s club The Wing and opened up about her pregnancy struggles, the music business, the prison system and of course the thing everybody wants to know about: her Nicki Minaj diss track “shETHER.” Nothing was off-limits and the all-women crowd at The Wing was here for it.

We were especially honored to have a group of young women from the WomanHOOD project in the audience. WomanHOOD is a feminist leadership and media literacy organization for youth from the Bronx, where Remy’s from! So sit back and enjoy, because the tea was hot and shit got real.

We’re talking music this week and we’ve got the one and only Kelly Rowland blessing the stude to talk about parenthood, nice pajamas and the “hell no’s” she heard on her path to fame. (If you’re wondering if Kelly glows so bright you can hardly look at her directly, the answer is yes.) And then, if you think you were conceived in a prayerful way with some missionary nookie, you’re wrong and Tracy is here to play you some songs that will haunt your dreams. We end this episode with some R&B-inspired rounds, because black folk made music what it is, no matter who got the Grammy.

Trump’s Executive Order had so many in the streets this past weekend. With so much on our minds and hearts, we invite friends Ahmed Ali Akbar (host of our sibling podcast See Something Say Something) and Bim Adewunmi, reporter extraordinaire, to chat with us about Muslim identity and resistance.

Plus, an Iranian man whose in-laws were detained at JFK airport walks us through the experience, and a pair of civil rights lawyers offer tips on how you can help if you’re feeling helpless.

Kim Drew and Tunde Olaniran pop by to bless the newly-inaugurated stude! *champagne popping emoji*

Tracy and Tunde bring back What Had Happened Was and Tracy tells the tale of narrowly escaping (maybe) being serial killed (or sex orgied.) Tunde, who you may remember from episode 60, does the very important work of giving us an update on what it’s like in Flint right now and how to actively help the folks there who *still* do not have clean water. It has been over 600 days.

Kim Drew, a.k.a. Museum Mammy talks about her work in the art world, growing up in the fancy school world and which young contemporary artists’ work you should know. She dismantles the idea of the carefree black girl in one blow: she’s careful and you’re going to love her for it.

We’re taking next week off so we can plan some fun stuff for the year ahead. But we’ll be back on 1/18, two days before what will surely be one of the saddest days in American history. Here’s to fighting the good fight in 2017.

It’s been a hard week. We’re still on vacation, but wanted to drop in to remind you to be kind to yourself in times of grief and anger. So, we’re revisiting our episode about the importance self-care in the wake of police violence. There’s fun stuff in here too, including Tracy’s Joke Time and the famous story about Cracker Barrel.

#CarefreeBlackKids2K16

If you want more laughs, and wonder why we keep apologizing, go back and listen to Episode 6, “Lit Like Bic” (featuring Desus Nice), aka the drunkest episode ever.
